Growing in holiness means growing in virtue — the Latin word “Via” means “Way” — and virtue is the true way of holiness. There are many wonderful passages in the Bible where the virtues are listed and described as the way we bear our fruits of holiness, both interiorly and exteriorly. About one year ago, I decided to promote the “Virtue of the Month,” in order to have our family really think more deeply about that particular virtue and how we can implement it in our daily lives. One of the ways we focus on the Virtue of the Month is to memorize scripture pertaining to that virtue. I search for a scripture verse and then post it prominently on a giant-sized post-it on the wall or on a door — somewhere around the house. I also display the verse in an acrylic frame on the kitchen table, so that we can recite the verse together at meal-times. Then we think and talk about the virtue in the course of our daily experiences — studies, entertainment or looking at the current culture — where do we see great and poor examples of this virtue? What is the flip side of this virtue — the vice — and what examples do we see of vice? How have we lived the virtue ourselves today or this week? There are so many different ways to focus on this — creatively, critically, and incorporating in daily living. More ideas coming soon . . .
